At least one dead and several injured in southern Spain church stabbing | World News

At least one person has been killed and several others injured after a man with a bladed weapon attacked a church in southern Spain.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that a suspect has been arrested following the incident in Cadiz.

The Spanish National Police told Sky News that the dead man worked as a sacristan at the church, while a priest was also in critical condition.

The man, described by local media as either wielding a cloak or a samurai sword, allegedly attacked churchgoers at San Lorenzo parish in Algeciras, a port city in the southern province of Cádiz.

The ministry said the victim was killed outside a church in San Isidro, while another person was injured inside the church.

“The facts are being investigated and analyzed, but it is not yet possible to determine the nature of the attack.”
The ministry said in a statement.

A police spokesman said the incident was under investigation and could not say at this stage what motivated the attack.

El Mundo newspaper reported that a total of four people were injured in the attack.

Francisco García, secretary general of Spain’s Episcopal Conference, tweeted: “I have received the news of the incident in Algeciras with great pain.

“These are sad moments of suffering, we are united in the pain of the families of the victims and the Diocese of Cádiz.”

Spain’s high court will investigate the stabbing at a church in Cadiz as terrorism, a judicial source told Reuters.
