According to writer-director James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to “easily” break even and turn a profit, thus confirming that the planned Sequels are happening.

Speaking to Chris Wallace on the latest episode of Who’s Talking? on HBO Max (via The Hollywood Reporter), Cameron said that the next six or seven years of his life are now locked for the upcoming Avatar sequels.

“Looks like the film is now at a pace that will easily pass our break in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t get out of it, I have to do these other sequels, Cameron said. “I know what I’m going to do in the next six or seven years.”

He added: “I’m sure we’ll be discussing the game plan for Avatar 3 with the top people at Disney soon.”

Cameron said the film, which was shot alongside The Way of Water, was “already in the can”. He added that some of Avatar 4 has already been filmed, and both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 have been written.

“We’ve started a franchise at this point. We’ve started a story that can now play out across multiple films,” he said.

The Way of Water was one of the most expensive films in history, with a production budget of $400 million and a marketing budget of $200 million for a total of $600 million. The Hollywood Reporter.

“I think eventually over time — I don’t know if it’s after three or four — I’d like to pass the baton on to a director that I trust to take over, so that I can do something. And do things that I’m interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know,” Cameron said.
