I was very surprised to read about all the things those people were doing,” she says in the latest episode of Sky News’ Ukraine War Diaries podcast.

“How can you be in a cafe or a restaurant? It’s war… and now you’re just like, oh, well – they did it! So, yeah, life goes on. Moreover, life now I try to remind myself every day.”

In recent weeks and months, Kyiv has found itself increasingly targeted. But the city’s businesses — and, for that matter, entertainment — continue to find ways to give citizens respite.

Some theaters have moved underground, using bombproof infrastructure, allowing them to continue offering shows, according to Ms. Kaushal.

“I think you’d be surprised to find that things are still happening,” says Ms Kaushal, who booked a comedy night this week to celebrate her husband and fellow diarist Siva’s birthday.

“You can go to a movie theater, you can go out to see a musical or a theater play and people are trying to figure out how to find underground places…”
