The 2000 film Gladiator is getting its sequel after two decades and now it might have found its lead. According to The Hollywood ReporterPaul Mescal (Normal People, Aftersun) is in discussion for the lead role of Connie Nelson’s Lucilla’s son Lucius from the original film.
The Oscar-winning Gladiator film centered on Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, who is forced to become a gladiator and feuds with Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). The original Gladiator was directed by Ridley Scott, who is returning for the sequel.
As per the deadline, “every male actor in town who fit the profile began chasing the coveted part” that Meskel reportedly was about to close. However, no other name was mentioned in the report.
Gladiator 2, or whatever the film is called, will take place “years” after the end of the first film, which ended with the death of Crowe’s Maximus. Lucious appeared in the original film as a young boy, played by Spencer Tratt-Clark.
David Scarpa (All the Money in the World) is writing the script for the new Gladiator movie. Scarpa also wrote Scott’s upcoming film Napoleon Bonaparte for Scott.
2000’s Gladiator was a huge critical and commercial success, earning $500 million at the box office and received 12 Oscar nominations. It won five Oscars, including Best Picture.
