Everything we know about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge test. Not just for the MCU but for its director James Gunn. All Marvel Studios films prior to Guardians featured a major member of the Avengers, or the Avengers itself. While they weren’t Spider-Man or Batman, Captain America and Iron Man at least lived in the cultural consciousness. Guardians of the Galaxy didn’t. During this time, James Gunn directed a handful of gory films, including the dark superhero comedy, Super.
Killer casting, a soundtrack full of uneven needle drops, and MCU-grade visual effects skyrocketed Guardian and Gunn from unknowns to household names almost overnight, making them both stars. These days, Gunn is taking the reins of Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC studio arm, and Guardians has a brand new (James Gunn-directed) holiday special. Gunn directed a film and a television series for DC, and characters from The Guardians of the Galaxy have appeared in multiple Avengers films and the latest Thor film, Thor: Love & Thunder, and even Has its own holidays too.
Now, though, it’s time for both Gunn and the current Guardians lineup to bide their time with Marvel, at least for now. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is almost here after a very long wait – thanks to some Unfair employment decisions by Disney–and hitting theaters in 2023 to replace that golden cliffhanger at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 left us about six years ago.
