Indian cricket star Rishabh Pant is facing a long injury spell after a horrific car accident that forced him to get out of the car after it burst into flames.
Police in the northern state of Uttarakhand said the wicketkeeper-batsman told officers he “fell asleep” at the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz car early Friday morning.
The car is understood to have flipped twice when it hit the central reservation.
Despite suffering multiple injuries, Pant managed to escape by breaking a window when he realized it was on fire, police added.
The 25-year-old suffered a cut on his forehead, a torn ligament in his right knee and injuries to his right wrist, ankle and foot, the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement. was
It said he had multiple abrasion wounds on his back.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said, “Rishabh’s condition is stable, and he has now been shifted to Max Hospital in Dehradun, where he will undergo an MRI scan to ascertain the extent of his injuries. Further treatment procedures will be devised.”
“The board will see to it that Rishabh gets the best possible medical care and gets all the support he needs to come out of this painful phase,” Shah added.
Local media reported that the player’s trip to Roorkee was to be a surprise for his mother before New Year.
Uttarakhand Director General of Police Ashok Kumar told Reuters: “Pant told local police that he lost control of his car after falling asleep for a few seconds. Police are investigating the matter. “
Pant was part of the Indian Test squad that won the series 2-0 against Bangladesh this month.
Ricky Ponting, head coach of Pant’s Indian Premier League side Delhi Capitals, tweeted: “Hope you recover and be back on your feet soon.”
