A man died in a Cork hospital in his late 80s after an apparent assault by a fellow patient.

Irish police arrested a man in his 30s at the scene, and he was taken to Bridewell Garda Station in the city.

Officials are not looking for anyone else in connection with the man’s death.

The incident took place at Mercy University Hospital on Sunday morning.

Police were alerted shortly after 5.30am.

It is understood that the patients involved were being treated in the same ward.

The area of ​​the hospital where the incident took place has been sealed off for forensic and technical examination.
