Race of the Day on Sky Sports Racing: Emitom gets the nod as an each-way selection in Lingfield feature | Racing News

Gary Nutting is hoping the already top-ranked hurdler can return to winning ways at Lingfield on Tuesday. Live on Sky Sports Racing.

Lingfield Park, the only UK track to host three different disciplines of racing (all-weather, turf flat and jumps), provides excellent racing on Tuesdays. Sharon Knapp Memorial Cup Handicap Hurdle (3.30).

The two-mile and seven-furlong event initially attracted 15 declared runners on ground that was officially described as heavy, soft in places, with more rain forecast.

Early betting on the 0-135 Class 3 event dropped him to 9/2 in the field, promising some lively exchange in the market.

A left-hander, unflappable and on the sharp side, Lingfield can give a good test of stamina when the ground is soft or heavy. As Mick Fitzgerald points out in his course guide, the conditions can be particularly testing downhill – “really deep and boggy” – making riding very different to the home straight.

Of the trainers represented in the race, Dan Skelton and Gary Moore have the best course hurdle strike rates over the past three years according to our statistics. By that same standard, Gavin Sheehan is an important jockey to note.

Stellar magic

A lightly raced dual Novice Hurdle winner who is 2lb lighter than last season’s reappearance in the improved Haydock Handicap. It hasn’t started but there remains room for improvement and the recent record is encouraging.

A royal dramatist

Streak of efforts at/off such mark since winning two novice hurdles in autumn last year. A return to the circle (looked hesitant) after finishing off the first-over fence last month and the best efforts have come on less testing ground.

Wild legs on top

Excellent experienced hurdler/chaser who made the event in January over heavy ground over short field course and distance conditions. Well treated on his best form if ready to go on this first start since being kicked out in the Grand National.

A course winner who is weighted here to avenge last season’s defeat by top Will Bean and this large field could play more to his strengths. He moved on in both of his subsequent outings but started the new campaign 27lb below the mark after his fourth in the 2020 Steers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Bushy Park

A stable mate of the top-weight top Valley Bean and his recent record is good, including landing the Kelso Handicap when chasing under the 4lb mark 11 months ago, which ended last season in the Class Two Haddock Soft. Done with great success over obstacles in the ground.

Looking for all-round value, ex-grade one actor EMITOM Approved based on his sliding handicap mark and good course form (two wins and a second).
