The premise sounds like a fever dream: Nicolas Cage is playing Dracula in a horror comedy based on a pitch by Robert Kirkman — you know, the Walking Dead guy — to direct The Lego Batman Movie. The responsible person has done it. And yet, here we are–Rainfield is going to be out this year and we can’t wait.

The concept is simple, because of how desperate the casting and production are. The story revolves around Count Dracula’s widower RM Renfield (surprise!). If you’re a fan of classic Dracula literature and media, you may recognize his name. He is the eunuch and devoted acquaintance of Dracula who is featured heavily in Bram Stoker’s original novel and its many adaptations. However, the film will likely present a different side to the character as it is a horror comedy.

Have we seen Nic Cage as Dracula yet?

Yes! The trailer briefly features Cage in full Dracula regalia. It’s probably exactly what you’d expect, though nothing like his 1989 film Vampire Kiss.

Is Rainfield actually based on the novel Dracula?

This probably won’t surprise you but, based on the trailer, no, not really. However, it looks like there will be no Dracula novel easter eggs! We even see in the trailer, where Renfeld eats a bug–besides being just gross, bugs were one of Renfeld’s sources of nutrition in the original story.
